Good morning. Back to School today for many and we're happy to run a seasonal message from Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates today. It's linked below. The editorial board also takes a timely look today at the importance of healthy school lunches. How can Grant Park be improved? How about decking over Lake Shore Drive so folks can get straight to the lake without dodging traffic? On Sunday, the editorial board looked at that question regarding one of downtown Chicago's greatest assets. We detailed many of the plans hatched by the Chicago Park District. Now the question is how the money is raised in a cash-strapped city. Enough money was raised for The 606, a fabulous walking and biking trail that is as close as Chicago gets to having New York's High Line. That path is, believe it or not, 10 years old now and our architecture columnist Edward Keegan took a look at how it all came together and what might be in the future of The 606. You've likely read a lot about the Uptown Theatre of late; the grand old movie palace is 100 years old and we have a piece from its owner, Jerry Mickelson, laying out what he thinks needs to happen to bring this Chicago jewel back to life. Jerry, of course, should be in a position to know. We've got a lot more. Today, you'll find an editorial looking at the impact of AI on fast food (who knew?), a piece on the loss of a great Chicago journalist who cared deeply for his community and another focusing on the importance of protecting Illinois wetlands. And, of course, we also have your letters. Have a great week. — Chris Jones, editorial page editor Submit an op-ed | Submit a letter to the editor | Meet the Tribune Editorial Board | Subscribe to this newsletter |
