Payton Tolle has thrown 97 innings this year — one more than his prior career high, when he threw 96 combined innings as a freshman at Wichita State and in summer ball in 2022.
The Sox hope he’ll be adding additional innings both this month and, assuming they reach the postseason, next. The 22-year-old is not thinking about potential limits to his season.
“I’m kind of an old-school guy,” said Tolle. “For me personally, I’m kind of like, ‘Just run me out there until I can’t anymore.’ But I know with [the] workload and trying to stay healthy in general, that’s probably not the best mind-set.”
On the contrary, it’s the perfect mind-set for a pitcher — but not necessarily for a team. And so, it is up to the Sox to define how much more he will throw in 2025.
