Darth Vader's ‘Star Wars' lightsaber fetches more than $3.6 million at auction

A Star Wars fan has forked over millions to control the power of the Force.

Darth Vader’s iconic lightsaber fetched $3,654,000 on Thursday, according to auction site Propstore, making it the most expensive piece of “Star Wars” memorabilia ever bought at auction.

The “original screen-matched, hero dueling lightsaber prop” was used on-screen in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” The lightsaber, known for its ominous red glow, appeared in some of the saga’s most famous scenes, including Vader’s “I am your father” reveal to Luke Skywalker.

PBS says it has cut about 100 positions because of loss of federal funding

PBS has eliminated almost 100 staff positions over the last several months because of a loss of federal funding, the organization said Thursday.

The job cuts include 34 staff members who were notified Thursday that they were losing their jobs, a spokesperson for PBS said.

The Republican-controlled Congress in July cut $1.1 billion in federal funding for PBS and NPR.

Mattel releases new Día de Muertos Barbie and Ken dolls

The colorful Mexican celebration of Día de Muertos is just around the corner, and Mattel has kicked it off by unveiling a Barbie and Ken doll to honor the tradition.  

This year’s Día de Muertos Barbie Doll includes Barbie in a dropping multi-tiered gown, while Ken sports a traditional charro outfit.

Both Barbie and Ken have their skull face makeup to resemble the famous “catrinas” as a way of paying homage to those who have passed. Their outfits are also embroidered with the commonly used marigold (cempasúchil) flower.

American Eagle counts new customers after Sydney Sweeney ad frenzy and shares soar

Shares of American Eagle Outfitters spiked 34% Thursday after the teen clothing retailer said the frenzy surrounding its Sydney Sweeney ad campaign drew new customers during its most recent quarter.

American Eagle rolled out its new new ad campaign starring 27-year-old actor over the summer. The fall denim campaign sparked a debate about race, Western beauty standards, and the backlash to “woke” American politics and culture.

Negative reactions centered on ads that used the word “genes” instead of “jeans” featuring the blonde-haired, blue-eyed actor known for the HBO series “Euphoria” and “White Lotus.”
