Anthropic’s piracy settlement: AI startup Anthhropic agreed to pay at least $1.5 billion to resolve an authors’ copyright lawsuit over the company’s downloading of millions of pirated books, one of the largest settlements over artificial intelligence and intellectual property to date.

Google’s European fine: EU regulators fined Google almost €3 billion ($3.5 billion) and ordered the search giant to stop favoring its own advertising technology services, prompting US President Donald Trump to threaten potential tariffs in response.

Samsung’s China reprieve: US officials are proposing a new licensing regime for shipments of chipmaking gear into China for Korean chipmakers Samsung and SK Hynix, offering a potential replacement for their previous indefinite approval.

TikTok rival Xiaohongshu Technology Co. is on track to triple its profit to $3 billion this year, after the Shanghai-based startup saw its valuation surge to $31 billion in recent transactions. The social media firm, built around its app known as RedNote outside China, gave investors a profit forecast roughly 50% higher than Pinterest Inc.’s earnings in 2024 and well ahead of Snap Inc., which has yet to complete a profitable year.
