I just caught wind that Austin spent $1 million to revamp the city’s brand, changing its city seal for a swoopy letter A. Reactions are mixed: When a TV station asked for opinions, one person said they liked the minimalist look; another felt the logo was too close to “a bad biotech company’s rebranding.”
Houston’s seal, on the other hand, hasn’t changed since 1840. It’s got a star, it’s got a train, it’s got a plow — echoes of the new city’s ambition to be a cotton-trading hub. Surely it’s time for a glow-up.
If Houston were to redo its seal today, what symbols would you add? Rockets? Tacos? Bayous? Beyoncé? I want your ideas! Tell me what you’d add — or better still, upload your best design by midnight Wednesday, Sept. 10. I’ll publish a selection in next week’s newsletter.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts last week about the new Texas law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public schools. The vast majority of you said that it’s a bad law, that it’s important to keep church and the state.
I guess we’ll see how the controversy plays out in court.
Until next time,

We cannot continue to build systems that shield abusers and re-traumatize survivors. It’s time for our laws, media, and public institutions to choose a side. I hope they choose the right one.
