The first taste of fall weather is here. But will it last?

My son's football practice starts at 5 a.m., so I'm out the door at an inhumanely early hour every day. Today, as I walked outside, I noticed a strange sensation on my skin. It took me longer than I care to admit to realize, through my sleep-deprived haze, that I was experiencing cool air.

My confusion may not entirely be related to my adenosine levels; we've had insufferably high temperatures most of the summer. Even last week, temps tormented us in the high 90s. But today, in typical Texas tradition, the weather just decided to do its own thing.

We've been blessed with a cold front, our newsroom meteorologist Justin Ballard reports, but as with all Houston-area weather, it comes with an asterisk.

*The front won't last long.

Check out Justin's coverage for what you need to know about the fleeting front. In the meantime, I'll be spending every second I can outside, soaking up the ephemeral autumn air.

The Texas Gulf Coast is rife with cool critters, Shakari Briggs reminds us.

Some of them, like manatees, are expected, but did you also know we have "spaghetti monsters" in our waters?

I did not make that up, by the way. It's a thing.

Check out Shakari's coverage to learn more about the fascinating sea creatures that inhabit our coast.
