Roadrunner Rundown
January 20, 2026
Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families,
Within our school and national calendar we move from commemorating the importance of the life of Dr. King and his messages on love, service, equality, human rights to the celebration of our community at MRES. We hope everyone can pop in for at least a few minutes this Friday to see the beautiful tapestry of people, cultures and languages that define our community. You can always leave International night with your stomach full of diverse cuisine and a smile on your face.
More details about the evening and how to participate are below.
Have a great week.

School Events and Information
Growth Takes Time!
Some parts of learning can be challenging/hard at times, we shouldn’t give up and we should continue to come to school. Some trees shed their leaves in the fall, for new growth in the spring. We must persevere when we don’t get it, yet, the growth will come if we come to school and don’t give up!
Tardy Students
Students may begin entering the building at 9:05 am and are considered tardy if they arrive after 9:20 am. Parents must accompany their children to the office and check them in at the front desk. The same procedure should be followed when a child arrives late because of an appointment.
Early Release of Students (appointments and travel)
Please notify the office via email to MarshallRoadElem.Attendance@fcps.edu by 1:00 pm stating the students name, teacher, and time of release. If any person other than the parent or guardian is to pick up the child, the school must have permission from the parent specifying the necessary information and the person must bring a photo ID. The latest time for a student check-out is 3:40 pm. Please come into the office to sign your child out. If you show up after 3:40 pm you may have to use Kiss and Ride Line as dismissal will have started and there is no parking in the bus lane or staff parking lot.
Dates to Remember
- January 23, International Night, 5:30-7:30 pm
- January 28, End of 2nd Quarter, 2-Hour Early Release
- January 29, Staff Development Day, No School for Students

2026 Yearbook Cover Contest
Our annual yearbook cover contest is in full swing! The winner gets their design on the cover of our yearbook and a free yearbook! Ms. Villanueva and Mr. Woodard have copies of the template and directions, but in the interest of saving paper, I have attached the documents for you to print as needed for whomever is interested. It is important to note that all submissions are due on January 28 by the end of the day. Please email Ms. Villanueva, cmvillanueva@fcps.edu or Mr. Woodard, rwwoodard@fcps.edu, if you have any questions.
It’s time to brainstorm project ideas for STEAM Night!
Calling all Marshall Road students! You are invited to design a tri-fold display that showcases an experiment or a passion connected to the STEAM disciplines. Projects will be proudly displayed at school and celebrated during our annual STEAM Night on Thursday, February 26, featuring exciting hands-on activities with real-world STEAM experts!
Tri-fold boards will be available in the main office, and all students who create a project will be entered into a raffle. Many volunteers will be needed to help with activities so please sign up here to support this inspiring event.

MRES Staff Spotlight
Hooray for Ms. Howard, one of our fantastic Kindergarten teachers who snagged the PTA Priority Parking Spot this week! This is Ms. Howard’s first year at MRES and her third year in the teaching profession.
When asked what she loves most about MRES she said “the people – everyone has shown me such genuine kindness, acceptance, and encouragement. I feel especially lucky to work alongside my amazing kindergarten team; they are truly some of the best people I’ve ever met.”
Outside of school, you are likely to find Ms. Howard at the gym, cheering on the Capitals hockey team, or diving into something creative. She loves all things crafty – crochet, painting, drawing, sewing, and more. Fun fact: Ms Howard is a proud cat mom to a very moody cat named Oliver Morty Wilson Howard.

Fairfax County is seeing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. Visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings.
Consider these tips from the Fairfax County Health Department to help reduce the spread of flu and other germs.
