In a congressional hallway last fall C-Span covered an entertaining press conference featuring Rep. Tim Burchett (R., Tenn.), who said: You know, everybody talks about this place being a dadgum swamp. It’s not a swamp. A swamp is something cool God created. It filters water, animal life lives and flourishes around it. This is a sewer. This is created by man and it needs to stop…everybody wants to knock Pelosi. Heck, she’s not even in the
top ten. He was talking about stock trading by members of Congress, but an unrelated story is lately providing very compelling evidence for his Beltway sewer-not-a-swamp thesis. Katie Bourque reports from D.C. for ABC affiliate WJLA-TV: President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that the federal government “has no choice, but to step in” after a collapsed sewer pipe sent nearly 250 million gallons of raw sewage into the Potomac
River last month. A sewer pipe near the I-495 and Clara Barton Parkway interchange collapsed on Jan. 19, sending wastewater into the ground, the C&O Canal, and the Potomac River. The sewer system, called the Potomac Interceptor, was built in the early 1960s and carried around 60 million gallons of wastewater daily to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant.
