Good afternoon. It's Thursday, March 26.

In today's newsletter:

  • The primary cause of death for a man who died while being restrained by Anchorage jail guards last year was asphyxia, a state review found. The state will not prosecute the correctional officers who restrained him.

  • New drone, sensor and radar technology being used by the state to help mitigate avalanches is expected to boost safety for drivers and winter maintenance crews in Alaska.

  • The Alaska Senate voted to apply the state's corporate income tax to oil and gas companies that currently pay no such tax. Estimates have said the change could raise over $100 million per year.

The only perfect bracket left after the opening weekend of the men's and women's NCAA tournaments was produced not by a college basketball expert or betting guru, but an eighth grader from Pittsburgh. His name is Otto Schellhammer. He's 14 years old. And despite his perfect-so-far women's bracket, he admits to knowing nothing about hoops.

Anchorage weather

It's sunny today with a high around 27 degrees. We'll continue to enjoy clear skies through this week and over the weekend, with daytime temperatures hovering in the high 20s for the next few days.
