A possible ban on using food assistance to pay for soft drinks is still in limbo, with the board that needs to approve it waiting at least one more month.

The proposed change wouldn’t allow the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to pay for sweetened beverages unless they contained milk, a milk substitute, or at least 50% juice. The state Board of Human Services originally planned to vote on it in March, but opted to punt until April. Its agenda for Friday now shows a procedural update, but no vote.

The Colorado Medical Society supports making the change, while anti-hunger groups generally oppose it.
