| We have a bushel of new theater reviews this week, including my takes on the Broadway productions of "Fallen Angels" (funny), "Fear of 13" (directed by Chicago's own David Cromer) and "Proof" (starring the incredible Ayo Edebiri from
"The Bear"). I just want to take a second to highlight "Proof," a David Auburn play that truly is a love letter to Chicago. So good to see it back with a mostly Black cast, a perfect fit for this beautiful script. Here at home, I have a new review of "Windfall," the world premiere at Steppenwolf Theatre from Tarrell Alvin McCraney, and a searing drama about the consequences of police violence and
the settlements that result. You'll also find my review of “safronia," a new work by avery r. young at the Lyric Opera that really is the birth of a new musical. Court Theatre will stage a full production next season. Meaghan McNeal and the company of “safronia” at Lyric Opera of Chicago. (Sulyiman Stokes) Freelancer Emily McClanahan has reviews of both "BOTH" (ha) and
"The Angel Next Door." In the news department, I reported today that Porchlight Music Theatre will be moving into the Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre for its entire next season. Certainly good news for the
struggling block around that historic venue. Even more reviews are coming next week as the Broadway season reaches
its climax and Chicago theaters roll out more of their spring productions. That's all for this week — got another review to write. See you at the theater. — Chris Jones, chief theater critic Esco Jouléy, Namir Smallwood and Jon Michael Hill in “Windfall” at Steppenwolf Theatre. (Michael Brosilow) Our current list of Chris Jones Recommends: “Hamilton” through April 26 at CIBC Theatre; “The Drowsy Chaperone” through April 26 at Theo Ubique Theatre; “Theater of the Mind” in an open run by the Goodman at the Reid Murdoch Building; “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” through May 3 at the Goodman Theatre; “The Merry Wives of Windsor” through May 3 in Chicago Shakespeare’s Courtyard Theater; "Windfall” through May 31 in Steppenwolf’s Ensemble Theatre; “Heartbreak Hotel” through May 31 at the Marriott Theatre. |
