The World Press Freedom Index thinks so. But we’re still using our First Amendment right as a reader-supported newsroom.

Keep the Press Free

Dear Mother Jones Reader,

This Sunday, May 3, is World Press Freedom Day, an annual observance established by the United Nations more than 30 years ago to bring attention to the importance of a free press and the freedom of expression.

We’re marking the day by celebrating our First Amendment right while also reflecting on the all-too-frequent attacks on the freedom of the press and on journalists themselves.

Support World Press Freedom

In 2025, the World Press Freedom Index labeled the United States as “problematic” when it comes to press freedom and ranked us at No. 57, two places down from 2024 and 12 spots down from 2023. We can’t imagine that trend has any chance of reversing in 2026.

What we can guarantee: We’ll keep reporting without holding back. Yes, we’re concerned about press freedom in the US. The assaults on the press from the Trump administration pose a danger to reporters across the country. The defunding of public media was a canary in the coal mine for how the administration deals with independent media. And the FCC’s pronouncement that it will obey the whims of the administration threatens to build bigger media dynasties, destroy newsrooms, and censor broadcasters.

We know—you know—that accurate news and information is essential for democracy. It’s the only way you can be sure that you’re getting the real story and hearing it from voices on the ground. So we promise to keep pursuing the truth and amplifying it to you.

Support a Free Press

If you’re able to, support a free press this World Press Freedom Day. We’ll be back in your inbox on Sunday with a reminder, but if you’re ready now, you can go ahead and donate here. Thanks for considering—more soon.

With gratitude,

Christine Holbert
