Quebec’s furniture industry lost two of its long-standing manufacturers in the space of two days this week, closures that industry leaders say reflect a deeper crisis gripping the province’s manufacturing base, The Gazette's Harry North reports.
South Shore Furniture announced it would wind down operations over the coming weeks, citing dumping by rivals from China and Vietnam and the effects of U.S. import tariffs.
Then, just the next day, union officials revealed that Bestar Inc would also shut its plants in Lac-Mégantic and Sherbrooke.
