From Black church editor Haleluya Hadero: Late last year, we began having conversations about launching a student column. Editor in chief Marvin Olasky and Big Tent editorial director Sho Baraka came up with a plan to highlight a range of student views about the biggest topics of our day, and they brought me in to help with the execution. |
|
To create the column, however, we needed to reach college students with evangelical convictions. In February, Sho and I met with a professor at Baylor University, who told us he could assign our questions to students as homework. We received more than 50 submissions from Baylor students in March for the first prompt (on affordability) and published 5. Last month, we featured reflections from students at different schools about generative AI use in college. |

The column, called The Syllabus, is back today. This time, students reflect on a Gallup survey that showed more young men are saying religion is very important to them while religiosity seems to be dropping among young women. Next month, students will answer how Christians can model an honest and charitable way of assessing and celebrating US history in the lead-up to the country’s 250th birthday. To see June’s prompt and submit a response, students can visit MoreCT.com/TheSyllabus. |

Throughout Scripture, God calls his people to be faithful and steadfast as we abide in him. Isaiah reminds us our faithfulness is fleeting "like the flowers of the field," yet our hope is secure when we place it in God, so our strength is renewed (Isa. 40:6, 31). In this issue, we consider stories of resilience. Historian Thomas S. Kidd shares missionary Adoniram Judson’s hardship and fortitude in Burma (now Myanmar). Emily Belz reports on Minnesota churches today that are supporting persecuted Karen Christians, also from Myanmar. Haleluya Hadero reports on groups who are determined to help Gary, Indiana, achieve a more resilient future. We also consider Tish Harrison Warren’s new book and feature an interview with her. Rooted in the person of Jesus Christ, Christian resilience is about more than having grit or bouncing back. |
