FDA Releases National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) Strategic Plan for 2026–2030

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in cooperation with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), its partners in the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS), is releasing the NARMS Strategic Plan: 2026–2030.

The plan’s release marks the 30th anniversary of the NARMS program. Since 1996, NARMS has evolved from antibiotic susceptibility testing of human Salmonella isolates to a modern, integrated One Health surveillance system driven by whole genome sequencing. NARMS provides stakeholders, partners, the scientific community, and the public with critical data and insights that drive coordinated action against antimicrobial resistance in the United States.

The 2026–2030 strategic plan is anchored in three themes:

1. Strengthening core surveillance
2. Expanding collaborative networks
3. Embracing innovation

These priorities reflect a commitment to improving and expanding antimicrobial resistance monitoring and data sharing and to translating decades of surveillance data into actionable research and evidence-based policy. As antimicrobial resistance continues to pose a serious and evolving threat to public health, the strategic plan positions NARMS to meet that challenge with greater coordination across the “whole of the government,” stronger partnerships, and enhanced data sharing tools.
