Understanding and Addressing Nonsuicidal Self-Injury in Veterans
Psychoeducation, Assessment, and Treatment
Tate Halverson, PhD
Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is increasingly recognized among Veterans, yet many clinicians and researchers lack the tools and guidance to effectively address this often-stigmatized behavior. NSSI presents unique cultural and contextual considerations in Veteran populations, and its frequent overlap with PTSD makes it an especially important clinical target.
This talk will cover:
- The prevalence of NSSI among Veterans
- Practical strategies for psychoeducation and stigma reduction
- Evidence-based screening tools
- Current treatment guidelines
- Future directions for research

PRESENTER INFORMATION
Tate Halverson, PhD
Dr. Tate F. Halverson is a clinical psychologist and Director of Community Engagement for the VA Mid-Atlantic MIRECC. Her research focuses on non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), emotion dysregulation, and related behavioral health concerns among veterans. Dr. Halverson examines psychological, interpersonal, and trauma-related factors that contribute to self-injurious thoughts and behaviors, with the goal of identifying mechanisms of risk and resilience. Her work aims to inform the development of evidence-based interventions that reduce self-injury, improve emotional functioning, and enhance recovery and quality of life for veterans and other trauma-exposed populations.

In Case You Missed it!
This CyberSeminar Series is brought to you by a partnership between the Veterans Health Administration Institute for Learning, Education and Development (VHA ILEAD) and VHA’s Suicide Prevention Learning Community.
The Learning Community represents an ongoing collaboration among multiple Suicide Prevention entities within VA including the Office of Suicide Prevention, VA Office of Research and Development Suicide Prevention Actively Managed Portfolio (SP AMP), VISN 2 Center of Excellence for Suicide Prevention (CoE), Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC), and Suicide Prevention Research Impact NeTwork (SPRINT).
The Office of Suicide Prevention is responsible for Suicide Prevention operations and supports both the CoE and Rocky Mountain MIRECC, who research Veteran suicide prevention and aid OSP with implementation and evaluation of new clinical programing. The SP AMP is the primary funder of Suicide Prevention research in VA while SPRINT serves as VA’s suicide prevention research core that helps connect clinicians and investigators with both ORD and OSP.
Please forward to others who might be interested in this learning opportunity.
