This week’s tip focuses on keeping summer meals safe during the ongoing multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak. Cyclosporiasis is a gastrointestinal illness linked to contaminated food and water, and many cases each year are associated with fresh produce.
Simple steps can help lower your risk of cyclosporiasis and other foodborne illnesses:
-
Wash hands with soap and water before and after preparing food
-
Rinse all fresh fruits and vegetables under running water, even if labeled “pre-washed”
-
Scrub firm produce (like melons and cucumbers) with a clean produce brush
-
Keep raw foods separate from ready-to-eat foods to avoid cross-contamination
-
Refrigerate cut, peeled, or cooked fruits and vegetables within 2 hours (1 hour if outdoors in hot weather)
People who develop persistent or relapsing watery diarrhea, nausea, bloating, or fatigue should seek medical evaluation, as these can be symptoms of cyclosporiasis.
