West Nile virus is showing up in Ontario

Positive mosquito pools carrying West Nile virus have been detected in several Ontario communities and across Canada over the past week, prompting renewed reminders for residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

Toronto, Windsor-Essex, Belleville, York Region and Halton Region have all reported positive mosquito pools this season, with public health officials saying the detections are an early sign the virus is circulating locally.

No human cases have been reported in those regions so far, but one person has tested positive while travelling outside of Canada.

William Shatner and daughter Melanie diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer at same time

Canadian actor William Shatner and his daughter Melanie revealed that they both battled Stage 4 cancer at the same time several years ago.

In an exclusive interview with People, the duo shared that they have both been cancer-free since 2024 after Shatner, 95, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in June 2023, and Melanie, 61, was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in July 2022.

Hair loss risk goes up on GLP-1 drugs, BMJ study finds

GLP-1 medications appear to be linked to a higher risk of hair loss for some patients, a new study suggests.

However, the overall risk appears to be “small,” researchers noted.

The observational BMJ study released Wednesday examined just over 50,000 people with Type 2 diabetes taking GLP-1 receptor stimulants, comparing them with patients using other diabetes drugs such as SGLT-2 and DPP-4 inhibitors.
