Monday’s storms were part of severe weather this summer, with hope that August may bring some relief

Extreme weather is nothing new to the region, but the number and intensity of storms this year has been unusual, experts say. Illinois had already set a record for tornadoes in a year, with 220 confirmed through Monday — more than twice as much as any other state.
