Blanche nomination on the rocks: President Trump said Thursday that he is willing to temporarily pull Todd Blanche's nomination for attorney general, as two key Republicans on the Judiciary Committee are withholding their support for it. Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina have raised concerns over a nearly $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund to compensate people who alleged they were unfairly targeted by the government. Trump said he would keep Blanche on as acting AG and renominate him later, after Cornyn and Tillis leave office in January.

A year and a half after leaving office, former West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin is embarking on a new political chapter with an initiative designed to elect independents to Congress.
Congressional correspondent Barbara Sprunt attended the launch of this effort, as Manchin convened a gathering of roughly 40 people, including high-profile donors, political reform advocates and several independent candidates at the Greenbrier Resort, a storied property in the former senator's home state that features a Cold War-era bunker designed to house every member of Congress in the event of a nuclear attack. |

The Shot: The Race to Contain Wildfires in France and Spain |
Authorities in France and Spain say some of the countries' wildfires that have raged for nearly a week are mostly contained, but other fires are blazing on, and a new wave of extreme heat, dry conditions and strong winds is raising fears of more fires to come.
The response has involved thousands of firefighters, military personnel and international support. Around 5,000 people are battling the flames in France, while the European Union has sent firefighting aircraft and helicopters to assist French Canadair planes that scoop water and dump it on the flames. |
