This year, Social Security celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Disability Insurance program—a significant milestone in our nation's commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities and ensuring economic security for all. I am honored to be Commissioner of Social Security during this historic time.
The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program was established on August 1, 1956, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the Social Security Amendments of 1956. The program initially covered workers aged 50 to 64 with a permanent disability and disabled adult children. Over the years, it has expanded to include workers of all ages and their dependents. Over eight million Americans currently rely on the SSDI program for financial support.
