 
Long Beach Veterans find way to serve again, this time through research.
34,000 Veterans from VA Long Beach Healthcare System have now joined the Million Veteran Program (MVP), VA’s largest research effort. MVP is working to improve Veteran lives by studying how genes, lifestyle, military experiences, and exposures affect health. Over 1,000,000 Veterans across the nation have already joined MVP.
Joining MVP involves:
- Filling out surveys through the mail or online about health and lifestyle
- Providing a blood sample, either by mail or in-person at a participating VA facility
- Granting MVP secure access to health records on an ongoing basis
- Agreeing to future contact by MVP for additional research opportunities

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced the launch of a new clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of psilocybin to treat major depression in Veterans, including those with concurrent post-traumatic stress disorder.
The new trial comes after President Trump’s recent executive order on “Accelerating Medical Treatments for Serious Mental Illness,” which aims to increase clinical trial participation and accelerate innovative research models and drug approvals for psychedelic drugs.
VA’s trial, titled “Psilocybin Intervention for Veterans Overcoming Treatment-Resistant Depression,” or PIVOT, reflects VA’s commitment to pursuing innovative solutions for Veterans who have not responded to existing treatments.
