Dear Colleague,

Have you heard the phrase "butterfly defect"? It's a play on the "butterfly effect," where a single small action in one part of the world can have significant consequences elsewhere. The "butterfly defect" refers to the vulnerabilities and systemic risks in our interconnected and rapidly changing world.

In higher-ed leadership during these fractured times, the "butterfly defect" feels even more intense in several ways:

  • Feeling Stuck in a Reactive Leadership Loop: Many leaders find themselves caught in a vicious cycle of reactive firefighting, systemic burnout, and never-ending crises. Prioritizing what's important, not just what's urgent, is easier said than done. Escaping this loop requires developing new habits, having tough conversations — including with ourselves — about what to stop doing, and fundamentally shifting our approach to work and time.
  • Needing to Prioritize Conflict Foresight: There's a critical difference between the "healthy conflict" that's necessary for growth and transformation vs. the “high conflict" that spirals out of control, eroding trust, morale, and productivity. Traditional conflict management often focuses on reactive problem-solving, but more time needs to be spent on what I call conflict foresight - the ability to proactively address the deeper roots of disagreements and create conditions for healthy dialogue and collaboration.
  • Experiencing the Costs of the Silo Syndrome: Silos, always inconvenient, are now one of our most serious threats. Transformational change is inherently cross-functional. Moreover, silos can make the butterfly defect most dangerous during a crisis, when miscommunication or misalignment can have far-reaching consequences. Breaking the silo syndrome requires a fundamental shift in mindset and culture, prioritizing new ways of building relationships, sharing knowledge, and engaging in collective problem-solving.

It’s impossible to navigate these challenges alone, and I’ve heard from countless college and university leaders that they’re looking for a space to learn, grow, and collaborate with peers. That’s why I’m excited to partner with The Chronicle of Higher Education to host our Fall 2026 Leadership Transformation Collaborative, a unique program grounded in fresh insights, practical tools, and peer community.

Join me and a cohort of your peers for a semester-long pathway that will help you develop leadership habits that you can use throughout this upcoming semester and beyond. Through 15 weeks of structured virtual exercises, discussion sections, and curated content, our program will help support your continuous growth and hardwire important practices that will advance both your institutional initiatives and your career. Learn more on our website.

I hope to see you as part of our community this semester. Together, we can turn the "butterfly defect" into opportunities for growth and innovation.
