Getting To and From School
There are three ways for students to get to and from school: walking, Kiss & Ride, or taking the bus. Please let your child’s teacher know your child’s daily transportation plan.
Our arrival window is from 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM, and the dismissal window is from 4:00 PM to 4:15 PM. Please plan for extra time during the first week of school as everyone gets familiar with the new routines.
Bus Information
For safety, no cars are permitted to enter the bus loop during arrival and dismissal.
Bus route information is currently available in your ParentVue account under the “Student Info” tab. The FCPS Office of Transportation will also send routes to parents and guardians the week of August 17th.
If a student who is assigned a bus wants to walk instead, the change must be approved first and can take up to a week. Please email both Mr. Basdekis at PDBasdekis@FCPS.edu and our Attendance Secretary, Karen Lopez, at KELopez@FCPS.edu, to get approval.
Please notify the front office by 3:00 PM on the day of any other transportation changes.
Kindergarten Bus Riders
For safety, every kindergartener who rides the bus must be met at their drop-off by a responsible adult or a middle school-aged or older sibling. If no one is there to meet the student, they will be returned to school, and a parent or guardian will need to pick them up.
Kiss & Ride
New car tags will be mailed out on August 14th to families who are not assigned a bus route.
If you don't recieve a car tag by open house or wish to use our Kiss & Ride line, you can get a new car tag before the first day of school. You can pick up your tag at the Kiss & Ride table in the school gym during Open House. Numbers will be reallocated this year so you will need a new tag to utilize our Kiss & Ride line.
For safety, we'll check IDs on the first day of school if a car does not have a Kiss & Ride tag on display. This ensures we are only releasing students to adults listed on their Emergency Care form. If an adult picking up a student isn't on the form, we'll need permission from a parent or guardian.
Walkers and Kindergarten Pick-Up
All walkers (except grade 4) will be dismissed from Door 3, located by the playground. If your child is in a modular classroom (grade 4 only), they will be dismissed directly from their classroom and will meet you by the playground. For safety reasons, only staff members are allowed to approach the modular classrooms or their doors.
Kindergarten Walkers
To ensure a safe and organized pick-up for our youngest students, all kindergarten walkers must be met by a responsible adult or a middle school-aged or older sibling. These designated individuals will be issued a special Kindergarten Walker Badge during our Open House event.
The person picking up a kindergartener must show this badge to the staff member at the door before the child will be released. If the person picking up the student does not have a badge, they must show a valid ID and be listed on the student's Emergency Care Form to be able to pick up the child.

Kiss & Ride Instructions
If you utilize our Coates Kiss and Ride line please follow the rules and see the map below:
- Students may be dropped off between 9am and 9:15am daily.
- Load and unload from the passenger side and ONLY in front of the orange cones.
- Do not pass other cars in Kiss & Ride.
- Remain in the driver's seat. (Staff members will assist with car doors.)
- Please follow directions of the supervising adults.
Seeking Parent Representatives for the Title I Parent Advisory Committee (TPAC)
We're looking for interested parents to serve as Coates' Title I Parent Advisory Committee (TPAC) representative or as a backup representative. TPAC members have the opportunity to learn more about the Title I grant in Fairfax County, family engagement initiatives across FCPS, and provide valuable input on the planning and implementation of Title I family engagement supports.

Coates is seeking two parent representatives to serve on the FCPS Superintendent's Family Vision Group. This committee provides families with the opportunity to connect directly with district leadership through bi-monthly conversations, share perspectives, and help shape the future of Fairfax County Public Schools.

Greetings from your school Health Room! Our Health Room team is excited to partner with you in supporting the health and well-being of your student. Our goal is to help every student stay healthy, safe, and ready to learn. The Health Room team is here to provide care for illness or injury during the school day, assist in managing health conditions, administer medications as needed, screen hearing and vision as indicated, and promote healthy habits. We value strong communication with families. Please keep us informed of any health concerns or medical needs your child may have so we can support them effectively throughout the school year.
How can you help us provide the best possible care for your student?
Does your student require a special diet?
- If your student requires a modified diet and will eat school meals, please refer to the Steps to Request Dietary Accommodations. Forms are available for students who require medical dietary accommodations and those who cannot drink cow’s milk and need milk substitutes.
Has your student had a head injury at home?
- Immediately notify the school heath room and your student’s school counselor so school staff can implement appropriate accommodations if needed and follow established protocols to support a safe recovery and return to learning.
Has your student had an injury at home that may impact their physical activity at school?
Any questions about opioid awareness?
Does your student have a medical condition, require medication during the school day, or need a health care procedure?
- If your student has a seizure disorder (epilepsy), please have your student’s health care provider complete the FCPS Authorization for Seizure Action Plan (SS/SE-385) and return it to the school public health nurse (PHN). This includes authorization for seizure rescue medications and procedures that may be required during the school day.
- If medication must be administered during the school day, please follow the guidelines established in the current version of FCPS Regulation 2102.
- Have your student’s health care provider complete appropriate FCPS medication authorization forms and submit them to the school health room annually, as applicable:
- Bring your student’s medications to the health room.
- If your student must have health care procedures during the school day, please follow the guidelines established in the current version of FCPS Regulation 2104.
- Have your student’s health care provider complete an appropriate authorization form and submit them to the school health room annually, as appropriate:
- Bring your student’s health care procedure supplies to the health room.

Study Help and Support Available to Students in Schoology
A new Schoology Study and Support Hub is available for students in Schoology. This space was developed by the FCPS Educational Technology Team with input from students. It is designed to provide essential study tools and academic support resources directly to our learners.

New Student ID Cards and Bus Navigation System
FCPS is launching a new bus navigation system, which includes student ID cards for students who ride the bus. Students will use the cards to tap on and off the bus, helping FCPS and families know exactly which students are riding which buses.
