Thursday, August 20th: New Student Orientation (Students Only)
9:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Orientation is for all students new to Thoreau (all 7th graders and new 8th graders) to meet teachers and walk their schedules.

Bus Transportation: Pick-up is at 8:30 AM from local elementary schools; departure from Thoreau is at 11:30 AM.

Participating Schools: Cunningham Park, Flint Hill, Louise Archer, Marshall Road, Mosaic, Oakton, Stenwood, Vienna, and Wolftrap.

Drop-off: If driving, please use the Kiss n’ Ride at Door 12.
Thursday, August 20th: Back to School Open House (Students & Families)
1:00 PM – 1:50 PM: Last Names A – L
2:10 PM – 3:00 PM: Last Names M – Z
Due to limited parking, we are asking families to attend one session. We will ask that you depart at the end of your scheduled timeslot to free up parking for the next group.
- Pick up a copy of your class schedule if you cannot access it on ParentVue/StudentVue
- Learn about our after-school programs and activities
- Drop off medical forms and medications to the Thoreau clinic
- Pick up pre-ordered school supply kits from our PTA
- Use MySchoolBucks to pay class fees or add money to your child’s lunch account
- Walk the building to locate your classes and meet your teachers

Beginning Thursday, August 20th at 6:00 am, all students and parents will have access to class schedules in SIS StudentVUE and ParentVUE.

Update Your Contact Information
Be sure you receive important information! Update your phone number(s) and/or email address(es) by clicking “My Account” and reviewing the “Online Verification/Update.” On that form, you can also update immunization records, health information, and emergency contacts.
☑️ Update Immunizations and Records
Immunizations are required for all students to attend school in Virginia.
When your child is immunized, remember to request a copy of their immunization record and bring that to our front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible. Find more information on FCPS’ website.
☑️ Learn About School Meals
Families need to provide their children with money to purchase meals at school or send them with a packed lunch. Alternatively, families may apply to receive free and reduced-price meal benefits, pending approval
☑️ Bookmark the School Year Calendar
Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:

Days marked blue with an “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.

Days marked orange with an “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings, if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days.

Days marked as TW, SD, and SP and in pink are holidays for students but working days for teachers and staff.
