Debate about the future of North Sea energy usually focuses on how much oil and gas is left for us to extract. But energy engineers at Durham University have proposed an alternative future. Once depleted, empty oil fields could be used to store “green” hydrogen – an energy-rich renewable made by passing electricity through water to split it into hydrogen and oxygen, without producing any carbon emissions. They’ve calculated that depleted North Sea fields could store enough hydrogen to power the UK for seven years.
