As always, we’re honored to be in your inbox. We had rain in LA this week and I feel fall inching closer. Autumn is my favorite as it’s a season of harvest, the point in the year where we take stock of what has grown, what we’ve gathered, and what is ready to share. In college, I had a friend who used to say, “Give the best that you have away.” She’d say this with a wink as she opened a nice bottle of wine she swiped from her uncle’s vineyard, or took us to her parents’ timeshare. Once she brought us to her family’s Filipino church potluck and we were nourished by the traditional foods and intergenerational warmth. She had access to nice things some of us did not, but more than that, she saw beauty everywhere and she kept giving it away. The practice caught on and soon we each showed up in our own ways. One friend lived at home and had access to her family’s weekly Costco bounty. She’d show up to class with Ziploc baggies filled with snacks to share. Our queen! Another friend taught us piano. I edited (and sometimes wrote 🙈) my friends’ essays. It created this really sweet sense of sisterhood. But I think the mantra stuck because it was reinforcing something I’d already absorbed as a child...
