Note from Los Angeles VA Regional Office Assistant Director, Jamie Cannon
Hispanic Heritage Month Message
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Veterans who have proudly served our nation. Their dedication and sacrifices strengthen our military, enrich our communities, and inspire our ongoing commitment to service. As our mission at VA involves taking care of our nation’s Veterans, we cannot forget the service and sacrifices of our Hispanic American Veterans. Over 30,000 members of our VA family consider themselves members of the Hispanic American community. Among our Hispanic and Latino colleagues, about 10,000 are Veterans—and they represent a proud lineage of Hispanic American Service members. The Director’s Office extends its deep appreciation to all Hispanic and Latino Veterans, employees, and families whose heritage and leadership continue to shape and uplift our mission. We are grateful for your service and proud to celebrate this month with you.

25 Years Later: Remembering 9/11
Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, our nation was forever changed. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost, families and communities were forever altered, and countless Americans came together in the aftermath. In the days and years that followed, a new generation of Veterans answered the call to serve, carrying the weight of that day into missions at home and around the world.
As we mark the 25th anniversary of September 11, the Department of Veterans Affairs honors those who lost their lives, remembers the first responders and service members who made extraordinary sacrifices, and recognizes the families who stood beside them. We remain committed to serving the Veterans whose lives were shaped by the events of September 11 and the years of service that followed. Twenty-five years later, we remember, we honor and we remain here to serve those who answered the call.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide has no single cause and no one approach can end it—but prevention is possible, especially when Veterans find support before a crisis happens.
VA’s National Strategy for Preventing Veteran Suicide and the White House’s national strategy to reduce military and Veteran suicide focus on clinical interventions and community-based outreach prevention strategies. That means everyone—relatives, friends, caregivers, community members, and health care providers―has a role to play in keeping Veterans safe and healthy. This whole-of-community approach to preventing suicide can be seen in VA-led programs and initiatives, such as the Governor’s and Mayor’s Challenges to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families and the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program.
We’re committed to offering and continuing to build a range of resources and a network of support for all Veterans, including those who do not, and may never, seek care within the VA health care system. No matter how you served, no matter what you're going through, support is available and there is hope.
