Not another Christa Pike: Tell Congress to support the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act.

Mother Jones Reader,

Christa Pike is alive.

You’ve seen the headlines. You know how Tennessee’s attempt to kill Christa Pike left her hospitalized, badly injured, but still alive. Hers was the state’s second brutally botched execution in the last six months. In May, Tony Carruthers was left bloodied and tortured by the same unqualified doctor in a failed attempt to execute him.

Neither should have entered the execution chamber. Christa Pike’s botched execution is showing the nation something we already know: The death penalty has no place in American justice.

Christa’s legal team is fighting for her, but there is something else you can do: Urge Congress to support the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act to ensure we never repeat this kind of torture again.

TELL CONGRESS: END THE DEATH PENALTY

Introduced earlier this year by Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Sen. Dick Durbin, this bill would permanently ban the death penalty at the federal level. It would also require resentencing anyone currently on federal death row. The U.S. Campaign to End the Death Penalty has made it easy to contact your legislators and show them your support.

If we can show Congress that there is strong support for ending this barbaric practice, we can build momentum that will lead to abolition federally and in the states.

Since 1999, advocates like you have helped reduce annual executions by nearly 75% and new death sentences by more than 90%. These changes didn't happen all at once. But in a critical moment like this—after the whole nation watches a state torture a woman who survived a childhood of sexual assault, abuse and trauma—your voice can help the death penalty abolition movement make big leaps forward.

Please act now to support the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act. Because change doesn’t happen all at once, but it can make big leaps forward at critical moments–like after the whole nation watches the government torture a woman who survived a childhood of sexual assault, abuse, and trauma.

TELL CONGRESS: END THE DEATH PENALTY

PS: We are in regular contact with Christa Pike’s legal team. Right now they are working to preserve evidence and asking for clemency. We can spare others from similar treatment by ending the death penalty once and for all.
