Freedom for the Menendez Brothers? |
Not so fast. As Deanna Kizis explains, the notorious duo’s bid for freedom just got more complicated, even after an apparent break in their case that arrived after Ryan Murphy’s hit Netflix drama about Lyle and Erik Menendez lit up screens this fall. Earlier this month, Los Angeles district attorney George Gascón lost reelection to tough-on-crime Nathan Hochman, which could have an impact on the brothers’ upcoming hearing to address whether they should be resentenced. And while the brothers are also petitioning Governor Gavin Newsom for clemency, Newsom recently announced that he is deferring his decision so that the new DA has a chance to weigh in. “These legal strategies will continue to play out, and the world is watching,” Kizis writes. “But considering the fact that the Menendez brothers killed their parents 35 years ago, why do we suddenly care so much about what happens to them?”
