Community Renovation Meeting Recap

Thanks to everyone who attended the Community Meeting last Wednesday! We had a great turnout to hear the project updates from the FCPS Design & Construction team.

For those who missed it, here is the link to the PowerPoint. https://www.fcps.edu/.../fchs_community_meeting_20241113.pdf

We look forward to finishing up Phase 2 implementations on the project in the March/April- 25 timeframe. Below are questions and follow-up items the community captured and asked for follow-up on during the meeting.

If you have specific questions you'd like to submit, you can do so on this page through 11/23 https://www.fcps.edu/.../falls-church-high-capital.../falls

Questions/Concerns:

  • Please provide improved lighting for security and safety during the renovation throughout the parking lots, campus and as far as we can go along our property to Providence parking lot. – Issue brought up in Oct 2023 meeting and has been addressed but continues to be an issue.
  • Please confirm the timing and phasing for Outside Sports fields/facilities (Phase 4?) of the project. It was disappointing to understand that while the commitment to put these components back into the project happened last October, it seems like little progress had been made on advancing the effort. (Currently starting to bid?)
  • Please provide details on sports field lighting funding and phasing to project
  • Community still feels there is a need for a bathroom in the science wing, once adjacent bathrooms are open, this may change.
  • Confirm if sports phase will include softball and baseball field batting cages
  • Supplementation to community-use budget for school and opportunity to offset this challenge for the school administration.- Issue brought up Oct 2023, Dr. Reid said she would look into it. With gymnasium closed in Phase 3, there will be increased impacts to community funding beyond community use with loss of ticket sales and concessions. Below
  • Plans for preserving the Mosaic in the gym lobby.

Jaguar Pantry Update

We are THANKFUL for the support in our community! From staff at FCHS to our volunteers and donors in the community, to Food for Neighbors and the Red Bag donors in our community, and for our partnership with CityLight Church and Food for Others who help us feed our most vulnerable families. All together we are currently supporting 100 students per week (with take home bags of food on Fridays) and about 60 families (with a bag of groceries and some fresh food once a month).

We Need Donations Urgently

We need about $400 to purchase items to complete our student take home food bags this year. If you are able to donate, click here. Thanks!

Are You a Red Bag Donor? Please tell your friends/neighbors.

Thanks to all of you who are Food for Neighbors Red Bag Donors! The November collection was a little less than we've collected recently and we've had some donors drop off. If you are able to donate a bag of groceries five times a year, please become a Red Bag Donor; click here.

Fairfax County Youth Survey on Physical and Mental Well-Being

The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The survey is given each fall to all students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12. It provides information about a variety of topics related to our students that influence their physical and mental well-being, from sleep and nutritional habits to substance abuse behaviors, symptoms of depression, and suicidal thoughts.

The 2024 Fairfax County Youth Survey will be taken by students between Tuesday, November 12, and Friday, November 22. Parents/caregivers will hear about plans to administer the survey from their child's school. They will also be able to opt their student out participating in the survey.

Visit the Fairfax County Youth Survey webpage for more information, and to review the opt-out forms and translations of the parent letter.
