- Wednesday 27th - Friday 29th - Thanks Giving Break
Powell families,
As December approaches we're excited to share our plans to keep spirits high for both our students and staff.
Student Spirit Weeks Look out for exciting details coming after Thanksgiving break! We're planning two fun-filled Spirit Weeks to energize our students and foster a positive school climate for the weeks of December 9 and 16.
Staff Appreciation To show our appreciation for our dedicated staff, we're organizing some morale-boosting activities. This year, we're adding a special twist: gift card prizes! To make this a reality, we kindly request donations of gift cards valued up to $10. Your generosity will help us recognize and reward our hardworking staff. Please send all gift cards in an envelope clearly marked “Social Committee” so your child’s teacher will know where to submit your donation.
By working together, we can create a joyful and supportive environment for everyone. Thank you for your continued support!
Warmly, Jamie Luerssen Principal

To ensure transparency and celebrate our progress, we will be sharing weekly attendance data in our newsletter. By highlighting this important information, we aim to keep our families informed and energized about our collective efforts to reduce absenteeism and prevent students from becoming chronically absent.
Chronic absenteeism is when a student has missed 10% or more of the school days in the school year. This includes all absences, regardless of whether they are excused and unexcused. Research shows that students who are chronically absent are at higher risk of falling behind and dropping out of school.
We care deeply about all of our students and aim for success for each student. Our partnership to support regular school attendance is critical to that success. Please follow the health policy and send your children to school every day.

- Number of students present EVERY DAY: 302 – That’s 35%
- Number of students present all but 1 day: 173 – That’s 20%
- Number of students NOT currently chronically absent: 771 – That’s 90%
- Number of students currently chronically absent (missed 10% of the school days so far this year): 69
- Number of unexcused & travel related absences: 524

We are thrilled to announce that several of our talented young musicians were selected to perform in the prestigious All-Virginia Orff Ensemble in Norfolk this week at the VME Conference. This exceptional honor is a testament to their dedication and hard work. The All-Virginia Orff Ensemble offers a unique opportunity for elementary students to delve deeper into the world of music, exploring creativity, self-expression, and collaboration. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to these outstanding young artists and their dedicated music teacher, Mrs. Cheryl Baker. Their achievements bring great pride to our school community.
Last Friday night, Liberty MS hosted a highly successful 6th grade band day, organized by the talented Joe LaBrie, band teacher at Liberty MS. Nearly 90 young musicians from the five elementary schools in the Centreville pyramid came together to perform, showcasing their skills and enthusiasm. We are incredibly proud of these future Wildcats and grateful to our dedicated teachers for their hard work and commitment to nurturing young musicians!
All families should complete a Federal Impact Aid Survey as soon as possible. The form is available in ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Only the enrolling parent can complete the form online.
We have sent home paper copies to all families who have not completed the form in ParentVUE.
As of today 673, forms have been returned or completed online. Thank you to all families who have responded.
New forms have been sent again to the 200 families we have not heard from.
Please complete the form for each school-aged child in your household as soon as possible.
Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. The funds support all Fairfax County public schools and centers. Visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page to learn more.
