Sanctuary Advisory Councils advise sanctuary superintendents on priority issues and connect local communities with sanctuaries, while providing opportunities for information exchange on issues affecting the health of sanctuary ecosystems. Council meetings are an opportunity for the public to comment on sanctuary activities and inform the councils’ recommendations. Non-governmental members represent a variety of interests including fishing activities, conservation, research, communities, education, and maritime activities. Government seats include the National Parks Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, California Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and U.S. Coast Guard.
