Message from Mr. Greata
It’s been a busy week here at Carter G. Woodson High School as we’ve been catching up from snow days, preparing for the end of the second quarter, and looking ahead to the 2025-2026 school year. This week, we were thrilled to welcome many of our families, including rising 9th-grade families, to CG Woodson for our Curriculum Night and start to envision the possibilities for the 2025-2026 school year.
Course selection is a vital part of our students' academic journey. Through conversations with parents, teachers, and students, it is clear that we all agree on the importance of providing access to rigorous courses that prepare our students for whatever paths they choose after high school. At the same time, we recognize the need to help students strike a balance between their academic life, extracurricular activities, and their pursuits outside of school. I look forward to continuing these important conversations!
This year, our course catalog has expanded to include additional AP options for 9th and 10th graders. Ninth-grade students will now have the opportunity to enroll in AP Human Geography, and sophomores will be able to take AP Seminar, which also fulfills an English 10 credit. We are excited about these additions, as they offer an accessible introduction to AP coursework and align with our commitment to academic excellence.
As these courses are new to our curriculum, we will continue to share more information about them in the coming weeks. Please stay tuned for updates as we learn and grow together in these offerings.
I’m also delighted to share some incredible news from our theater program! Our recent one-act play earned recognition for Best Music and Best Storytelling at the Virginia Thespian Festival. Additionally, Silas Blocker was named to the All-Star Cast, and both Aiden Brennan and Julie Gurrola received Top Actor awards for their performances in Essential Self-Defense. The VHSL One-Act Competition is this weekend, and we wish our talented thespians the very best of luck!
Our Science Olympiad team has been achieving amazing results this season. On December 14, they placed 1st out of 27 teams, and on January 11, they again took 1st place out of 60 teams. These are incredible accomplishments in such a competitive environment! Their next competition is the Princeton University Invitational on February 1—go Cavs!
This week, we also celebrated our senior athletes on the wrestling team (Wednesday night) and the swim and dive team (Thursday night). It’s always heartwarming to reflect on how much our seniors have grown. You can continue cheering them on this weekend:
-
Swim and Dive Team: Competing tonight and tomorrow at Oakmont.
-
Wrestling Team: Competing tomorrow at Annandale High School.
-
Basketball Team: Traveling to Osbourn High School tomorrow after a decisive win against Fairfax High School last night. Go Cavaliers!
Next week, our choral department presents the highly anticipated Dessert on Broadway, with a show on Friday night and two shows on Saturday. For tickets and more details, please visit the Dessert on Broadway website.
A quick reminder: there is no school this Monday, January 20, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Also, the second quarter ends soon, on January 28. Please check in with your student to ensure they’re on track to finish the semester strong.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and their incredible activities. Have a wonderful long weekend!
Warm regards,
Kevin Greata Principal
