Literacy Instruction using the Benchmark Advance Program:
As we continue to build on our reading and writing skills, students have been exploring a variety of genres, from animal fantasy and fairy tales to poetry and realistic fiction. By reading and comparing these selections, students will develop a deeper understanding of storytelling and the purpose behind it. In addition, they will compare characters’ perspectives and see how they evolve throughout the story. Students will explore how stories can change depending on who’s telling it. A highlight will be examining selections like “The Blind Men and the Elephant,” where students will understand how different viewpoints contribute to a fuller picture of a story. These lessons will provide valuable insights into how authors craft narratives and how these skills can translate into a deeper understanding of the world around us.
The Benchmark Advance program offers activities that you and your child can do together at home to reinforce what they are learning in class, encouraging meaningful discussions. These lessons will not only inspire the writer in your child but also help them connect stories to their broader studies in other content areas.
Activities to enjoy at home:
- Have conversations about books your child is reading at school
- Draw and narrate stories together
- Add a stanza to a Fairy Tale song
- Make a list of rhyming words
- Make a diorama of your favorite part of a story
- Visit the public library
- Read to/with your child daily

Ariel Brathwaite, School Counselor
This will be my first year at Bren Mar, and I’m so happy to work with you all.
A bit about me: I’m Barbadian and came to the U.S. to pursue my Master’s in School Counseling after earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with Management. Helping and working with students has always been a passion of mine, and I’m excited to do so here at Bren Mar.
Outside of work, I love family, music (you’ll often catch me singing to myself!) and admiring nature. I’m also a big fan of games and enjoy having fun with them.
